Dr Jo Hacking

Wellbeing advocate, transformational coach and retreat organiser

Why am I a coach?

I came to coaching as my medical career diversified, and my focus moved to addressing the wellbeing needs of fellow Healthcare staff.

Receiving coaching helped me move forward at times when I felt stuck.

Now, I run retreats and workshops for doctors and other healthcare workers, for which coaching is a natural extension. My lived experience and knowledge combine to allow me to provide a supportive space whilst having a broad but non-judgemental understanding of the context of the stories people have to tell, and by which they may then understand themselves.

 About me:

I am a mother, wellbeing advocate, transformational coach and retreat organiser. I value nature, the positive impact of connecting with nature, the wellbeing of the natural environment and our place as an integral part of it.

I live with my husband, our 3 children, some hens and dogs. I grew up with a love of being outdoors, looking after woodlands, wildlife and learning about the natural world.

I also crafts, watercolour, sketching, pottery, walking, music and writing.

Career:

I went to Medical school in London and worked as a doctor-then-paediatrician for over 20 years. I have been an APLS and ATLS instructor, course director and enjoyed providing medical education in many guises.

In the latter decade – as a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine – I experienced complex burnout. This culminated in my career plans altering and gradually changing course away from clinical medicine. This was when coaching helped me the most.

I value all my life experiences – even the most difficult ones – as they inform who I am today. Having learnt the perils of ignoring my emotions and the warning signs that stress was taking its toll. I learnt how to ask for help. I bring with me the understanding that having a space to speak without any expectation of a “fix it” or “vested interest/ opinion based response” is a privelege and its power cannot be overestimated.
